Artist Statement    This painting was sketched at St.Sulpice, one of the oldest places of worship in France. The Baroque church was erected over an ancient Romanesque church originally constructed during the 13th century, which was built over ruins of a prehistoric temple dedicated to Isis. Sanctuary has multiple meanings – it is both a place of worship as well as a place of safety.  I tried to capture the spirituality of the light as it lights up a very modern girl in an attitude of prayer.  She seems safe bathed in all that light.
