Artist Statement     On a blazing hot day in August, the Indianapolis Library held its annual plein air competition in Garfield Park. Artist friends from the Indiana Plein Air Painters Association told me about some old bridges in the park, and painting in the shade seemed like a very good idea. I decided to use an odd shaped panel, 6" x 18", which I had brought with me—after all, a bridge would be the perfect device to unite the two sides. About a dozen frustrating thumbnail sketches later, it seemed impossible to place it on the panel. I was ready to give up and started walking away. I turned for one last look and there was the perfect angle. The picture won first place.
