Artist Statement When painting landscapes my goals include not only capturing the effects of light on the scene, but, more importantly, the sense of atmosphere, mood and unique color harmonies I see when I am on location. This scene is a field that has laid fallow for several seasons since the horse barn on the property burn down. The barn was never rebuilt, so the field is no longer used to grow hay for the horses. In my initial plein air study, the sky was filled with stormy clouds and it fit the mood I was feeling when painting along the farm field. The next day, however, I passed the field on a glorious summer day. Although I used the plein air study for reference, I decided to instead capture the gentle summer mood and atmosphere of the sunny day when I started the larger studio painting, “Fallow Field.”
