Artist Statement     I first remember wanting to be an artist when my uncle Douglas Hay, a New England portrait artist and teacher, gave me a set of tube watercolors for my eighth birthday. When I was in high school Douglas introduced me to soft pastels and we spent many summer days painting scenes around the Vermont town where I grew up. I later studied painting at the Rhode Island School of Design and the University of Vermont. Since 1978, I have been painting and teaching art at my studio in Alaska, where I conduct workshops in pastels and oils and offer fully supplied "open studios"  to visiting artists. I feel extremely lucky to be able to do what I love for my life's work, and to be doing it in such a beautiful place.
